Our journey towards bringing technical possibilities for matchmaking to a new level continues. First stop – the removal of the Away Goals rule on December 31, 2023.
We are going into 2024 full speed ahead, with the development of the announced technical efforts for matchmaking being in full swing. In this edition of Behind the Scenes we bring you the latest news about what lies ahead, so buckle up and read on!
On our path towards bringing technical capabilities for matchmaking to a new level in 2024, we will be eliminating the Away Goals rule with the start of the season 179 on December 31, 2023. This is an important step towards improving the competitiveness in official competitions and aligning the expectations with real-life football rules.
How does the Away Goal rule change affect the tie-break criteria? From season 179, the team with more goals at the end of the home and away legs in a tie will proceed to the next round, with extra time and penalties being played if necessary at the end of the second leg when the score is level on aggregate. This means that the Away Goals rule will no longer determine who goes through in the Cup, Champions League and Super League competitions if the two teams share the same number of goals after both rounds of the tie.
This is the first, but not the final stop. In 2024 we continue to work on improving the matchmaking capabilities in order to open up possibilities for a more diverse and competitive experience across official competitions. The road to its release is lengthy but worthwhile, and we are excited to share the progress and more information about the plans for it in the new year. Stay tuned!
In the meantime, we wish you wonderful holidays and a great start to the season and new year!
See you on the 2024 touchline,
